Liss Riverside 3 Bridges Project

The Liss Project received £48,000 of LEADER funding to refurbish three oak pedestrian bridges along the Riverside Railway Walk, using traditional Green Oak carpentry techniques.

Each bridge will take a year to build, and the apprentice on the first shall build and project manage the third and final bridge. Each bridge is named after an individual who has made a significant impact on the local environment and biodiversity.

Bridge one, Rose Bridge: A tribute to internationally renowned botanist Dr. Francis Rose.

Bridge two, Briggs Bridge: Named after the Officer commanding the nearby army garrison in Longmoor. This bridge has a significant cinematic history: World famous film stars such Leslie Phillips, Spike Milligan and Frankie Howard filmed along the railway line.

Bridge three, Nightingale Bridge: Also named after a serving army commander, this bridge will reflect the military history of the railway line, which transported thousands of troops and equipment during the Second World War.

All three bridges celebrate the South Downs National Park.

An integral part of the LEADER funding is close support between the LEADER team and the applicants and awardees.
