Spinney Hollow Woodland project

Charcoal productionThis is an exciting woodand project supported by the Fieldfare Local Action Group.

During a recent visit, Rob Humby (LAG Steering Group member) commented "This is fantastic, the work that Geoff and Kate have achieved using natural resources is incredible. They have so many examples of the social benefits that their enterprise has brought to individuals, we could spend weeks listening to them. This project really demonstrates how a RDPE LEADER grant helps preserve and protect the natural environment, promotes education and understanding of woodlands and tradtional crafts and how to achieve this with a low impact, low carbon approach"

Geoff explains how the charcoal kiln works to RobSPINNEY HOLLOW is a five and a half acre wood set in a 90 acre copse on the edge of Winchester Hampshire.

This woodland project is managed by Geoffrey Brown, Kate Hadley and some wonderful friends and volunteers!

Within the Spinney Hollow boundaries we run 6 day chair-making workshops, stool making weekends, offer the space to small groups to run their own workshops. and hold arts events for the local community.

The plot includes a green wood work workshop and outdoor kitchen - which can also be used as an indoor/outdoor meeting/workshop space, rustic accomodation and we also have a compost loo and many places to sit, wander and think.

We also make Charcoal and practise woodland crafts which we show at local fairs and festivals.

THE WOOD…

The wood mixed broadleaf with Oak, Ash and Sweet Chestnut as standards with a dash of Larch, the understory comprises of Hazel, Holly and Hawthorn. Sighting of deer are common and badgers live in the neighboring wood, Spinney Hollow homes many different species of wild flower such as the Common spotted orchid, Early Purple Orchid, bluebells, foxgloves, wood spurge, Primroses and many more! The rich bird life in the wood is a joy from dawn till dusk. With many sightings of Buzzards, Long Tailed Tits, Owls and Nut Hatches to name but a few.

SPINNEY HOLLOW makes up 5 1/2 acres of a 90 acre copse on the edge of the Winchester District. A few years ago it was split up into plots and sold to12 different parties, before this it was managed for a shoot. The woodland is again starting to be managed and cared for in a low impact way.
